Sonia Rykiel: the queen of tricot

Figura senza tempo della couture francese, Sonia Rykiel è stata una delle ultime protagoniste della “moda moderna”, vera e propria pioniera di quell’emancipazione femminile che, anche attraverso gli abiti, ha rivoluzionato le convenzioni e i costumi dell’occidente.
Nata a Parigi da una famiglia di origini romene, la Rykiel fa il suo esordio nel mondo della moda nel 1968 quando, in piena rivoluzione studentesca, apre il suo storico atelier in Rue de Grenelle. Ed è proprio in quel di Saint Germain, che la “Regina del tricot” reinventa il concetto di lana, che nelle sue spregiudicate creazioni sembra quasi diventare un filato prezioso.
Più che uno stile, il suo è “il manifesto del tessuto” che segna l’epoca post Chanel, proiettando le donne verso un mood che riesce ad essere androgino, ma allo stesso tempo femminile.
Il fil rouge del suo percorso creativo sono i maglioni, i quali, intrepretati in molteplici varianti, diventano uno strumento atto a scardinare i codici della tradizione couturier.
Vivace, talvolta sovversiva, riesce a cogliere lo spirito rivoluzionario dei suoi tempi, per lei la moda è uno sguardo sulle cose, una filosofia demodé che attraverso un gioco di linee, tagli, cuciture e colori, punta a liberare le donne dai dogmi dello stile.
Resa celebre da cristalli, strass, piume fiori e dagli immancabili pull a righe (insignita della Legion d’Onore nel 1985) è diventata Icona per gli occhi smeraldo, lo charme e per il suo quarantennale caschetto rosso…

An all-time great personality of French couture, Sonia Rykiel was one of the last protagonists of the “modern fashion”, a true pioneer of the feminine emancipation that, also through clothing, revolutionized habits and traditions of the western world.
Born in Paris, from a Romanian family, Rykiel debuts in the fashion world in 1968, when during the peak of the student riots, she opens the historic atelier in Rue de Grenelle. And it’s right in Saint Germain that the tricot Queen reinvents the concept of wool, giving it the prestige of a precious yarn.
Her style is a “fabric manifesto” that marked the post-Chanel times, bringing women towards an androgynous mood, without losing the femininity. The common thread of her career are the sweaters, which she interprets in many different ways, using them as a tool for the deconstruction  of the traditional couturier codes.
Lively and sometimes subversive, she manages to embody in her works the revolutionary Zeitgeist of the late ’60s: for her, fashion is a way to look at the world, an old-fashioned philosophy that using a play of lines, cuts, stitchings and colors, aims to free women from the style dogmas.
Made famous by crystals, rhinestone, feathers, flowers and the classical striped sweater (awarded with the Legion of Honor in 1985), Sonia Rykiel became an Icon also because of her emerald eyes, her charm and the  forty-year-old red bob.
