Francesco Scavullo nacque nella NY degli anni 20’, dove a soli quattro anni ispirato dalla bellezza di Greta Garbo scoprì la passione per la fotografia.
Autodidatta, all’età di otto anni, costruì una rudimentale camera oscura nella quale sviluppava le foto scattate alle sorelle che si divertivano a “scimmiottare” le modelle di Vogue e Harper’s Bazaar.
Ancora quindicenne, sviluppò tecnica e talento alla corte del fotografo di Vogue Horst P. Horst, e grazie alla sua sagacia appena quattro anni dopo riuscì a convincere l’editore della rivista “seventeen” a pubblicare una sua foto in copertina, era il 1948 e aveva solamente diciannove anni.
La sua ascesa fu rapida, in breve tempo aprì il suo studio a Manhattan e scattò innumerevoli copertine per varie riviste tra cui: Cosmopolitan, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, Life e Rolling Stone.
Gli anni settanta sancirono una stretta collaborazione con Andy Warhol, scattò foto per “ Interview” e fece poster e copertine per i più importanti artisti del periodo; celebre resterà la foto che scattò al simbolo di Woodstock Janis Joplin un anno prima della sua tragica scomparsa.
Il perfezionismo di Francesco Scavullo segnò la fotografia del ‘900, talvolta scandaloso riuscì immortalare la bellezza dei volti e renderla: penetrante, graffiante, autentica e immortale…

Self-taught, at the age of eight years, he built a makeshift darkroom in which developed the pictures of his sisters who delighted in “ape” Models of Vogue and Harper‘s Bazaar.
Yet fifteen, developed technique and talent to the court of Vogue photographer Horst P. Horst, and thanks to his sagacity just four years later was able to convince the publisher of the magazine “seventeen” to publish one of his pictures on the cover: it was 1948 and he was only nineteen.
His rise was rapid, within a short time he opened his own studio in Manhattan and shot countless covers for magazines including: Cosmopolitan, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, Life and Rolling Stone.
The seventies sanctioned a close collaboration with Andy Warhol, snapped photos for “Interview” and made posters and covers for the most important artists of the period; it will remain celeb the photo who snapped at the symbol of Woodstock , Janis Joplin a year before her tragic death.
