Animals, Africa and Pirelli: it’s Peter Beard!

Sarà stato il 1997, avevo poco più di 14 anni, e mi ricordo che avevo appena acquistato la copia mensile di “Elle” italia. In allegato ,quel mese, c’era una bellissima cartolina del fotografo Peter Beard. Io personalmente non lo conoscevo, ma il suo modo di ritrarre gli animali che ho visto nel servizio interno, mi ha colpito molto, e da quel momento è entrato a far parte dei miei fotografi preferiti. Mi sono documentata su di lui e sulla sua carriera: la collaborazione con Andy Warhol, il mal d’Africa e le sue foto per il calendario Pirelli 2009 in Botswana, me l’hanno fatto amare ancora di più. Le sue foto contengono l’innocenza dell’infanzia assieme al disincanto nei confronti della vita, tipico dell’età adulta;  un mix di scatti color seppia, con contaminazioni d’arte contemporanea (macchie di colore ad olio e tempera apparentemente casuali), sono il suo marchio di fabbrica. Lo adoro: “guardare” per credere!

It must have been 1997, I was just 14 years, and I remember I had just purchased the monthly copy of  “Elle” Italy. Enclosed, that month, there was a beautiful postcard of photographer Peter Beard. I personally did not know him, but his way of portraying the animals I’ve seen in the service inside,  impressed me a lot, and since then he has become one of my favorite photographers. I have been documented about him and his career: the collaboration with Andy Warhol, his love for  Africa and his photos for the 2009 Pirelli calendar in Botswana, have made me love him even more. His pictures contain the innocence of childhood with the disenchantment of life, typical of adulthood, a mix of sepia shots, with influences of contemporary art (patches of oil paint and tempera seemingly random), are his trademark.
